404
An error message generated by a server when a web page is not found. Many webmasters make their own 404 page containing advertisements.
Alt Tag
Displays a text label where an image will appear before the image loads. This can help with search engine positioning.

Auto-submit Refers to a website or piece of software that automatically submits your site to link lists or search engines. Some link lists will not accept auto-submitted sites.
AVS Adult Verification System. Devised as a method to ensure that visitors to an adult site are of legal age, based on the assumption that if a person has access to a credit card then they are old enough to legally access the site.
Bandwidth When referring to hosting plans, the amount of data that may be transferred during a month without incurring any extra charges.
Blacklisted Banned
Blind Link A misleading link.
Broadband High speed Internet access (i.e. cable and DSL).
CGI Common Gateway Interface. A protocol used to provide access between a server's software and programs or scripts running on it.
Chargeback When a credit card gives a refund to a customer; usually because the customer is unhappy with the product or service purchased.
CJ (Circle Jerk) A term referring to a group of web pages designed to run a visitor around in circles until they go to where the webmaster wants them to go.
Clickthrough Ratio (CTR) One of the measurements that webmasters use to judge a sites "success". The ratio of visitors that click through to a sponsor compared to the total number of visitors.
Console (Pop-up) A browser window that automatically opens containing advertisements. Prohibited by many of the larger link lists.
Content Items such as images and movie clips used to entice a surfer to visit a site.
Conversion Ratio A measurement that webmasters use to judge a sites "success". The ratio of visitors that join a sponsor compared to the visitors that were sent to the sponsor.
Convert To make the transition from a visitor to a member.
Counter A piece of software embedded into a web page to measure the number of page views and other statistics.
CSS Cascading Style Sheets
Dedicated Server A hosting option where one server is used exclusively for one webmaster. Usually more expensive than a virtual account.
DMOZ A directory similar to Yahoo.
DNS Domain Name Server. Acts as a "phone book" translating domain names into IP addresses.
Domain Name Provides an easier way for people to remember a web site. A domain name is translated by a DNS (see above) into an IP address when a site is called up.
E-mail Sponsor A sponsor payment program that pays webmasters for visitor's e-mail addresses.
FPA Full Page Ad. Although definitions vary, an advertisement taking up most of a page.
Free Host A host that derives its income from adding advertisements or consoles to the sites that it hosts. Some sponsors offer free hosting to webmasters promoting their sites without the consoles or banners.
Free Site A site that does not charge for admission and makes its profit by promoting Pay Sites.
FTP File Transfer Protocol. A method of transferring files over the Internet.
Gig (gigabyte) 1,000 megabytes. Often used as a measurement of bandwidth.
Hardcore Content containing one or more of the following: contact with the genitals, erect penises, spread female genitals, or bodily fluids.
Hotlink Illegally linking to another sites content.
HTML Hypertext Markup Language; the programming language used to build web pages.
htaccess A technique used to protect a directory by requiring a password.
IP address A series of numbers representing an address for a website. For example. 204.71.200.69 is Yahoo.com.
ISP Internet Service Provider
Javascript A client (browser) side scripting language that provides some capacity for dynamic content.
Link List A web site that lists other sites for its visitors, providing the listed sites with traffic.
