Common Gateway Interface. A protocol

a customer; usually because the customer is unhappy with the
product or service purchased. |
| CJ (Circle Jerk) |
A term referring to a group of web pages
designed to run a visitor around in circles until they go
to where the webmaster wants them to go. |
| Clickthrough Ratio (CTR) |
One of the measurements that webmasters
use to judge a sites "success". The ratio of visitors that
click through to a sponsor compared to the total number of
visitors. |
| Console (Pop-up) |
A browser window that automatically
opens containing advertisements. Prohibited by many of the
larger link lists. |

Items such as images and movie clips
used to entice a surfer to visit a site. |
| Conversion Ratio |
A measurement that webmasters use to
judge a sites "success". The ratio of visitors that join a
sponsor compared to the visitors that were sent to the sponsor. |

A piece of software embedded into a
web page to measure the number of page views and other statistics. |

A hosting option where one server is
used exclusively for one webmaster. Usually more expensive

A directory similar to Yahoo. |
| DNS |
Domain Name Server. Acts as a "phone
book" translating domain names into IP addresses. |
| Domain Name |
Provides an easier way for people to
remember a web site. A domain name is translated by a DNS
(see above) into an IP address when a site is called up. |
| E-mail Sponsor |
A sponsor payment program that pays
webmasters for visitor's e-mail addresses. |
| FPA |
Full Page Ad. Although definitions vary,
an advertisement taking up most of a page. |
| Free Host |
A host that derives its income from
adding advertisements or consoles to the sites that it hosts.
Some sponsors offer free hosting to webmasters promoting their
sites without the consoles or banners. |
| Free Site |
A site that does not charge for admission
and makes its profit by promoting Pay Sites. |
| FTP |
File Transfer Protocol. A method of
transferring files over the Internet. |
| Gig (gigabyte) |
1,000 megabytes. Often used as a measurement
of bandwidth. |
| Hardcore |
Content containing one or more of the
following: contact with the genitals, erect penises, spread
female genitals, or bodily fluids. |
| Hotlink |
Illegally linking to another sites content. |
| HTML |
Hypertext Markup Language; the programming
language used to build web pages. |
| htaccess |
A technique used to protect a directory
by requiring a password. |
| IP address |
A series of numbers representing an
address for a website. For example. 204.71.200.69 is Yahoo.com. |

| Link List |
A web site that lists other sites for
its visitors, providing the listed sites with traffic. |
